A dumpster rental is not a pickup-and-return hire. Nobody comes to your yard: a truck drops a 20-yard container on a driveway on Tuesday, the customer fills it, and the same truck collects it the following Tuesday. The rental window is the delivery date and the pickup date, the “where” matters as much as the “when”, and the final bill is not known until the container has crossed the landfill scale. Sales Igniter is self-hosted dumpster rental software that books by delivery and pickup date, holds stock per container size, and carries the placement, permit and overage detail on the order. It runs on your own WooCommerce or Magento 2 site with no per-booking commission and no monthly SaaS fee.
What Makes Dumpster Rental Different
Booking plugins written for tours and appointments assume the customer collects the product and returns it on a fixed date. Roll-off and skip hire breaks that in several ways:
- The booking is a delivery date and a pickup date. The container is on site for the whole window, and the truck run on each end has to be scheduled with it.
- Stock is a quantity per size. You own eight 10-yarders, twelve 20-yarders, six 30s and four 40s, and the customer needs one of a size — not a specific serial. Availability has to be counted per size, per day.
- Weight is billed after the fact. A 20-yard hire includes a tonnage allowance; the landfill ticket decides whether there is an overage, and that charge lands days after the container came back.
- Placement decides whether the job can be done. Driveway or street, the surface, the overhead clearance, the gate width and whether a permit is required are all questions to ask before the truck is dispatched.
- Swap-outs and extensions are routine. A renovation fills a container faster than planned; the customer wants a fresh one dropped the same day the full one leaves, or wants three more days.
- Prohibited materials and liability need a signature. No tyres, no paint, no appliances with refrigerant, no hazardous waste, and the customer has to acknowledge that before the drop.
Book by Delivery Date and Pickup Date, With Stock Counted per Size
In Sales Igniter the start date of the hire is the delivery date and the end date is the pickup date. The customer picks both on a calendar, or picks the delivery date and a hire length — 7, 10 or 14 days is typical — and the pickup date is set for them. Every day in between counts against stock for that container size.
Each size is a product with its own quantity, or a variation of one “roll-off dumpster” product with independent stock and pricing per size. Either way the availability calendar answers the question the customer is really asking: is there a 20-yarder free to be dropped on the 14th and collected on the 21st? If all twelve are out on any day in that window, the date is greyed out, and the 30-yard option beside it may still be open. The engine counts stock per date, not as a single in-stock number, which is what a generic cart gets wrong. See the full rental system feature list for how per-date quantity inventory works.
Turnaround Days for the Haul, Tip and Return Trip
A container collected on Friday is not on the yard and empty on Friday. It has to be hauled, tipped, and often washed or repaired before it can be dropped somewhere else. Sales Igniter lets you set a buffer after every hire, per size or as a site default, in hours or days. With a one-day buffer, a 30-yarder picked up on Friday is next offered for delivery on Monday, and the calendar removes the intervening days from sale automatically. Buffers can differ by size — a 10-yarder that turns around the same afternoon and a 40-yarder that needs a day — and they apply on every channel that reads the calendar.
Placement Address, Access Questions and Permits
The delivery address on a dumpster order is frequently not the billing address: a rental property, a job site, a relative’s house being cleared. Sales Igniter captures it on the order along with the placement detail that decides whether the driver can do the drop. With the rental custom fields add-on you attach the questions to the product itself: driveway or street placement, surface type, gate width, overhead wires or low branches, whether boards are needed under the rails, and where exactly on the property the container should sit.
A street placement usually needs a municipal permit. A required checkbox confirms the customer has one or asks you to obtain it as a chargeable extra, and a file upload takes the permit itself. Because the fields belong to the cart line, a contractor ordering a 20-yarder for one site and a 30-yarder for another carries two placement records, not one note against the whole order. Required fields block add-to-cart, so a job cannot reach dispatch without a placement answer. Read about dumpster rental custom fields, permit uploads and waivers.
Tonnage Allowances, Overage Charges and Prohibited Items
Flat-rate dumpster pricing includes a weight allowance, and the landfill ticket decides the rest. Sales Igniter prices the hire itself — per size, per hire length, with extra days at a daily rate — and gives you two ways to handle the weight that is only known afterwards. The first is a refundable security deposit taken at checkout: when the scale ticket shows an overage, the per-ton charge is kept from the deposit and the balance released, with the reason recorded against the order. The second is to add the overage as a charge to the order after weigh-in and bill the stored card, which suits account customers on a monthly statement.
Prohibited materials are the other after-the-fact cost. A signed hire agreement listing what may not go in the container, and a checkbox acknowledging the contamination fee, makes the eventual charge a term the customer agreed to rather than a surprise on an invoice.
Swap-Outs, Extensions and Extra Days
A swap-out is booked as a second hire on the same address that starts the day the first ends, so the truck collects the full container and drops the empty one on a single run, and both hires sit on the calendar with their own stock. Extensions are self-service: a customer who needs the container three more days extends the hire from their own account, the calendar checks the size is still free for those dates, and the extra days are charged at the daily rate before the pickup is rescheduled. Your drivers see a dated list of what is going out and what is being collected each day, which is the whole of dispatch for a small operator.
Deposits, Hire Agreements and Liability Waivers
Refundable security deposits
Take a deposit per hire at checkout through your normal payment gateway, keep the overage or contamination charge from it if the scale ticket says so, and release the rest automatically.
Signed hire agreements
The customer signs your terms, the prohibited materials list and the placement liability wording during checkout; a PDF is generated with their signature and stored against the order.
A record per drop
Every hire keeps the address, the placement answers, the permit, the dates and what was charged, so a damaged driveway claim or a disputed overage is a lookup rather than an argument.
Deposits and contract signing are add-ons to the same booking engine, not separate software: the deposit is calculated on the same order as the hire, and the agreement is signed in the same checkout the delivery date was chosen in.
Run It on WooCommerce or Magento 2 — Same Rental Engine, Your Platform
Sales Igniter Bookings & Tours — the WooCommerce dumpster rental plugin
The right fit for most independent roll-off and skip hire operators. If your site already runs WordPress, this turns it into a dumpster booking system without rebuilding the storefront you have.
- Per-size quantity stock counted per day, so a 20-yarder is only sold when one is actually free for the whole window.
- Delivery and pickup dates as the hire, with fixed 7, 10 or 14-day lengths or a free choice of dates.
- Turnaround days after each hire, set per container size.
- Placement, access and permit questions asked at booking and stored against the order line.
- Refundable deposits for overage and contamination, plus a signed hire agreement at checkout.
- Self-service extensions and swap-outs booked against the same address.
Sales Igniter — the Magento 2 dumpster rental extension
For multi-yard waste and skip hire companies on Adobe Commerce or Magento Open Source — regional depots, contractor accounts and tendered work.
- Multi-source inventory holds container stock per yard, so a customer is offered sizes from the depot that serves their postcode.
- B2B account pricing for builders, property managers and councils, with negotiated rates and monthly statements.
- Request-for-quote for long-term site containers and commercial waste contracts rather than card checkout.
- The same per-date stock, buffers, deposits and signed agreements as the WooCommerce build.
- Multi-store and multi-language for groups trading under several brands or regions.
Not sure which platform fits? Our Magento versus WooCommerce comparison for booking and rental businesses sets out the trade-offs honestly — we sell both, so the choice is yours to make on merit. Dumpsters are one of the trades on our rental software by industry overview, which shows how the same engine is configured for each.
Setting Up Dumpster Rental Bookings, Step by Step
1. Create a product per container size with its quantity
10, 15, 20, 30 and 40-yard containers each get a product, or a variation with its own stock, and the number of units you own becomes the per-day availability.
2. Put the delivery and pickup calendar on the product page
Customers choose a delivery date and either a pickup date or a hire length. The calendar shows only windows where that size is free on every day between.
3. Set the turnaround days
Add the haul, tip and return time after each hire, per size. The engine removes those days from sale automatically.
4. Price by hire length, with extra days and tonnage terms
Set the flat rate per size and length, the daily rate for extra days, and state the included tonnage and the per-ton overage in the product description and the signed agreement.
5. Add the placement questions, the permit upload and the deposit
Attach the placement, access and permit fields, mark the ones that must be answered, and require a refundable deposit and a signed agreement before the order can be placed.
6. Dispatch, collect, weigh and settle
Drivers work from the dated delivery and pickup lists. After the scale ticket comes back, keep any overage from the deposit or bill the stored card, and release the balance.
