The competitor

What WooCommerce Bookings is, and who it is for

WooCommerce Bookings is the booking extension made by Woo, the company behind WooCommerce, and sold on WooCommerce.com.1 It adds a bookable product type to your store: appointments, reservations, classes and rentals, booked in blocks of minutes, hours, days or months, with persons and with resources such as staff, rooms or equipment.3

It is built around time. Availability rules at store, product and resource level decide which blocks can be booked, buffers sit between bookings, and costs can change by date, day, time, persons or length.1 Its documentation lists rentals and hires among its uses, and says it is not designed for one-off event tickets or recurring events.2

It is a subscription for one site: $249 a year for product updates and support, renewed at the current list price.16 Part payments, recurring billing, extra booking options and a front-end availability calendar come from separate extensions, each with its own subscription.1

What it does

Bookable products

A product type booked in fixed or customer-chosen blocks of minutes, hours, days or months, with a start-and-end range picker for day bookings.3

Persons and person types

Minimum and maximum people per booking, and person types such as adults and children, each with its own cost.5

Resources

Staff, rooms or equipment with their own availability and quantity, chosen by the customer or assigned automatically.6

Flexible costs

A base cost and a block cost, plus cost ranges by date, day, time, persons or length of booking.4

Approval and cancellation

Require your approval before the customer pays, and let customers cancel the bookings you allow.3

Calendar and Google sync

An admin calendar by month, day or schedule, and one-way or two-way sync with Google Calendar.7

Emails and notices

Emails at each booking step, a reminder the day before with a calendar file, and notices to everyone booked on a product.10

Extensions around it

Deposits, Product Add-Ons, Bookings Availability and AutomateWoo are separate extensions; Accommodation Bookings is a free add-on.1

The alternative

Sales Igniter: a rental plugin for WooCommerce, Magento 2 and Shopify

Sales Igniter is also a plugin that runs inside your own WooCommerce store, so with either one the booking form sits on your product pages and the orders go through your own checkout. The difference is what each is built around: Sales Igniter tracks rental stock by quantity or by serial number, checks items out and back in, and adds deposits, contracts, maintenance and stock by location.19

On WooCommerce and Magento 2 you buy it once, get the complete source code and run it on your own hosting, with unlimited staff logins, products, customers and orders; renewing updates each year is optional.19 The same engine runs as a Magento 2 extension and as an app for Shopify, billed monthly or yearly through Shopify, coming soon.21

Frequently asked questions

Is Sales Igniter a yearly subscription like WooCommerce Bookings?

Not on WooCommerce or Magento 2: you pay once, a year of updates and support is included, and renewing is optional. WooCommerce Bookings is $249 a year per site, renewed at the current list price; if the subscription lapses, the extension keeps working but updates and support stop.17

Does WooCommerce Bookings track serial numbers or check items back in?

Its documentation describes counts per time block and per resource, and an attendance status on each booking; serial numbers and send-and-return screens are not described.9 Sales Igniter tracks stock by quantity or by serial number and checks items out and back in at the Send & Return desk, with a barcode scanner if you have one.

Can I take deposits and recurring payments?

With WooCommerce Bookings, part payments come from the separate WooCommerce Deposits extension and recurring payments from WooCommerce Subscriptions, each sold on its own.1 In Sales Igniter for WooCommerce, paying part now and the balance later is in Regular, and refundable security deposits and subscriptions are in Pro.

Does Sales Igniter have per-person prices and staff, like WooCommerce Bookings?

Yes, on WooCommerce in Regular: guest types such as adults, children and infants each have their own price, and staff and resources (guides, captains, boats) can be attached to a product so sales stop when none is free. WooCommerce Bookings has person types and resources built in as well.5

Can I sell rental packages and kits?

Yes. Sales Igniter for WooCommerce includes Bundles & Composites, so a package is one product while each item in it draws on its own stock. The WooCommerce Bookings documentation lists Product Bundles and Composite Products as not compatible with it.12

Does Sales Igniter sync with Google Calendar?

Sales Igniter gives you an ICS feed that Google, Apple or Outlook calendars can subscribe to, and imports iCal feeds, from Airbnb for example, to block dates that are already booked. WooCommerce Bookings syncs with Google Calendar, one way or both ways.7

Is there a Magento or Shopify version?

Yes. Sales Igniter is also a Magento 2 extension, and Rentals & Bookings for Shopify is billed monthly or yearly through Shopify. The Shopify app is coming soon, and its prices appear on this page at launch. WooCommerce Bookings is for WooCommerce only.
