YITH Booking vs Sales Igniter: a WooCommerce rental plugin comparison

YITH Booking and Appointment for WooCommerce is a well-built booking plugin, and if you rent out hotel rooms or sell consultations it may be all you need. Equipment, camera, party-supply and baby-gear rental businesses tend to hit a different wall: eighty chairs booked across two overlapping weekends, four camera bodies that are not interchangeable once one comes back faulty, a security deposit that has to go back to the customer minus the repair. This YITH Booking alternative comparison follows those problems through both plugins so you can see which one fits before you pay for either.

Disclosure: this comparison is published by Sales Igniter, the maker of Bookings & Tours. It is documentation-based — every claim about either product is taken from the vendor’s own product page, docs, changelog or pricing, linked where it is made, and no hands-on test results are included. Researched 7 September 2026 against YITH Booking v5.36.0 and Sales Igniter Bookings & Tours v1.0.60. Where we could not find something in a vendor’s documentation we say “Not verified” rather than “not supported”, and we hold our own product to the same rule.

Quick verdict: YITH Booking vs Sales Igniter

Consider Sales Igniter if you rent physical items that leave the building and come back. It tracks quantity per date range or individual serial numbers, has send (check-out) and return (check-in) pages with barcode scanning, blocks turnaround time before and after a hire, and the Pro edition adds refundable security deposits and a signed PDF hire agreement at checkout. It is a one-time licence with optional renewals and open source code.

Consider YITH Booking if you sell accommodation, appointments, services with staff, or simple per-day hire where nothing needs checking back in. Its people types, services, resources, search form and one-way Google Calendar sync are built for that, it slots into the wider YITH plugin family (Multi Vendor, Request a Quote, Gift Cards), and if you are already paying for YITH plugins the annual subscription may be the more familiar model.

Side-by-side comparison for WooCommerce rentals

“Included” means in the base product. Where a capability needs the Pro edition, a separate paid plugin or custom code, the cell says so. Source links point at the vendor documentation the claim came from.

RequirementSales Igniter Bookings & ToursYITH Booking and AppointmentWhy it matters
Date-range and time-of-day bookingsIncluded. Date only, date + time, fixed lengths, or fixed schedules; hour-by-hour availability (product docs)Included. Units of month, day, hour or minute; a calendar range picker only when the unit is one day; durations must be whole multiples of the unit (duration docs)An 8-day hire on a 3-day unit is not bookable in YITH; check your typical hire lengths
Quantity availability across overlapping rentalsIncluded. Inventory “by quantity or by serial number, set per product”; overbooking can be allowed or blocked (feature list)Partial. “Max bookings per unit” and resource “Available quantity”; YITH’s FAQ states “the plugin does not manage any stock” and suggests people types as a quantity workaround (FAQ)Chairs, tables and strollers are counted stock; a per-slot cap is not the same as a stock ledger
Individual asset / serial trackingIncluded. Serials per unit with notes, cost and rental history; barcode/QR label PDFs since v1.0.50 (serials docs, changelog)Not verified. Resources can carry a quantity but no serial or per-unit history is documented (resources docs)Camera bodies and power tools differ once one has a fault; you need to know which unit went where
Pickup / check-out and return / check-inIncluded. Send and Return pages, bulk actions, early send and return, return by barcode, picklist CSV/PDF (send & return docs)Not a workflow. Check-in / Check-out fields are labels: “You do not manage actual times using this option” (docs); statuses run Unpaid → Paid → CompletedRental staff need to record what left and what came back, not just that a booking was paid
Buffer / turnaround timeIncluded. “Turnover time before and after”, globally or per product (feature list)Included, after only. “Buffer time” is applied after a booking is placed (time increment docs)Delivery the day before an event needs a buffer before the hire too
Duration and seasonal pricingIncluded. Hour/day/week/month/year grid, pro-rated or not, in-between prices interpolated, special dates, length-based discounts (feature list)Included. Base price per unit plus price rules by date range, months, weeks, days, time or duration; no interpolation between tiers (price rules docs)Both can do “summer +10%”; they differ on how many rules a 1–30 day price curve takes
Refundable security depositsPro edition (or $199 add-on). Deposit is a separate fee line paid with the order; refund in full or in part through Stripe, PayPal, Braintree or Authorize.net; automatic release on completion with a 0–30 day delay (refund docs)Different capability. The YITH Deposits / Down Payments plugin (sold separately) splits payment into a deposit and a balance due later; not a refundable deposit (integration docs)Partial payment, refundable deposit and card hold are three different things; see below
Card authorization holdNot verified. Docs describe deposits as charged and refunded, not heldNot verified. Not found in the booking or deposits documentationNeither vendor documents a pre-auth hold; ask before relying on one

Partial payment, refundable deposit, card hold: not the same thing

Both vendors use the word “deposit”, and the meanings are different. YITH’s deposit is a down payment: the customer pays, say, 50% now and the balance on the start date or a set number of days before it. It is part of the price. Sales Igniter’s deposit is refundable security: a separate fee line on top of the price, charged with the order and refunded, in full or in part, through the gateway when the item comes back. A card authorization hold (funds reserved but not captured) is a third thing, and we could not find it documented for either product. If you need a hold rather than a charge, ask both vendors before buying.

Three rental scenarios, followed through both plugins

These are hypothetical examples built from the documentation above, not test reports. Where the docs do not say how something behaves we flag it as needing hands-on checking, and we suggest the one screenshot that would settle each point.

Scenario 1: 120 folding chairs across two overlapping weekend events

Situation. A party-supply company owns 120 white folding chairs. A wedding needs 80 chairs delivered Friday 9 October and collected Monday 12 October. A corporate lunch needs 60 chairs for Sunday 11 October only. Chairs need one day to wash and restack after each job. Can the site sell both without overselling, and can it turn the second customer away when it should?

Sales Igniter. One product, quantity inventory 120, turnover one day before and after. The wedding reserves 80 chairs from 8 to 13 October once buffers apply; the corporate customer picking 11 October sees 40 and cannot take 60 unless overbooking is enabled. Staff see both jobs on the by-day inventory report and dispatch from the Send page with a picklist. Needs hands-on checking: how the product page presents a partly available quantity. Screenshot: the inventory report for 8–13 October showing 80 out and 40 free.

YITH Booking. A daily bookable product with “Max bookings per unit” 120, or a resource with quantity 120. YITH counts bookings per unit, not chairs per booking, so the 80-chair wedding is one booking unless a people type named “Quantity” is used, as its FAQ suggests. Buffer applies after the booking only, so the delivery day needs an availability rule or manual booking. Needs hands-on checking: whether a people-type quantity of 80 reduces remaining capacity or only changes the price. Screenshot: the admin calendar for 11 October showing remaining capacity.

Practical difference. Sales Igniter treats 120 chairs as stock that overlapping hires draw down; YITH treats them as a cap on simultaneous bookings, and says it does not manage stock. The pre-hire buffer is the second gap. See the party and event rental plugin page.

Scenario 2: four cinema camera bodies, one comes back faulty, deposit partly retained

Situation. A camera hire house has four identical cinema camera bodies. A production rents two for 14–16 November with a $500 refundable deposit per body. Body 3 returns with a damaged XLR port: withhold $150, refund the rest, pull body 3 from the calendar until repaired, and remember which unit had the fault.

Sales Igniter (Pro). Serial inventory with four serials; the deposit is per product, multiplied by quantity, so the order carries two $500 fee lines. On return, staff scan both barcodes on the Return page and note serial 3. WooCommerce’s refund button on the deposit line refunds $350 and keeps $150 as revenue (“Partially Refunded”); the other $500 goes back in full through Stripe, PayPal, Braintree or Authorize.net. A maintenance ticket takes body 3 out of inventory with the repairer and cost. Needs hands-on checking: refund timing on your gateway (Authorize.net refunds settled transactions only, usually next business day). Screenshot: the order with one deposit line fully and one partially refunded.

YITH Booking. A bookable product with “Max bookings per unit” 4, or a resource with quantity 4. There is no serial layer, so the booking records “two cameras”, not which two. A refundable deposit is not a feature; the Deposits plugin splits the price into a down payment and balance, which is a different arrangement, so damage money is a manual refund or separate charge. Taking body 3 out of service means lowering the cap to 3 or adding a not-bookable rule. Needs hands-on checking: whether a rule can block one unit of a multi-quantity resource. Screenshot: the resource edit screen with quantity and availability rules.

Practical difference. Serial tracking, partial deposit refunds and maintenance tickets: Sales Igniter documents all three, YITH none. See the AV and electronics rental page and the refundable security deposits add-on.

Scenario 3: a ten-day stroller and travel-cot hire with a signed agreement and a mid-hire extension

Situation. A baby equipment rental business hires a travel cot and a stroller to a visiting family from 3 to 13 November, priced per day with a cheaper weekly rate. A signed hire agreement covering safe use is needed before handover. On 10 November the family asks to keep everything two more days.

Sales Igniter (Pro). Day and week prices in the pricing grid, with the ten-day total interpolated; one day of turnover after for cleaning. At checkout the customer types or draws a signature under your terms and the PDF is attached to the receipt and kept on the order. The feature list says customers “can extend a live rental order from their account, with the price recalculated automatically”; staff can also edit order dates. Needs hands-on checking: the extension when the stroller is already booked from 14 November. Screenshot: the My Account order with the signed PDF and the extend option.

YITH Booking. Daily bookable products with customer-chosen duration and a rule such as “from 7 to 30 days, decrease 15%”; the price is unit price times ten with the rule applied. There is no signature step, so the agreement is an email attachment or a separate e-sign service. The admin can edit the booking’s duration; a customer-side extension is not documented. Needs hands-on checking: whether editing the duration re-validates availability and recalculates the order. Screenshot: the edit-booking page after changing the end date, with the order total.

Practical difference. Pricing is a wash. The signed agreement is Pro-only in Sales Igniter and absent in YITH; self-service extension is documented only for Sales Igniter. More on the baby equipment rental page.

Strengths and trade-offs of each plugin

Where YITH Booking is stronger

  • People, services and resources. Adult/child pricing, paid services, staff or room resources with their own availability. Rental plugins rarely model this.
  • Booking search form via shortcode or block, and a Google Maps address per product, both useful for accommodation and venues.
  • Admin confirmation flow with Pending / Confirmed / Rejected statuses, plus a manual booking that can be created without an order.
  • Time-based notifications before and after start and end dates, and 13 email templates.
  • Ecosystem. Multi Vendor, Request a Quote, Gift Cards, Multi Currency and SMS are documented integrations if you already run YITH.

Where Sales Igniter is stronger

  • Stock that is actually stock: quantity or serial inventory, overbooking on or off, manual reservations, maintenance tickets, an inventory-by-day report.
  • The warehouse side: Send and Return pages, early send and return, barcode scanning, picklists, return-reminder and overdue emails.
  • Buffers before and after a hire, globally or per product.
  • Bundles, composites and variable products rent with per-component stock; YITH rules these out.
  • Pro add-ons that are rental-specific: refundable deposits, signed PDF agreements, subscriptions and memberships with a rental queue.
  • Ownership. One-time licence, 100% open source code, no licence check, and the same engine on Magento 2 if you ever change platform.

Verified Sales Igniter limitations

  • Multi-inventory centres and multi-store are listed as “would need customization” on the feature list. If you dispatch from several depots, budget for that.
  • Multi-vendor is a paid custom Dokan integration (changelog v1.0.1), not bundled. YITH’s Multi Vendor integration is documented, though also a separate paid plugin.
  • Deposits, contracts and subscriptions are Pro or add-on, not in the $199 Regular licence.
  • No people types, services or resource scheduling. If your product is a person’s time, YITH models it and Sales Igniter does not.
  • Card authorization holds and a two-way Google Calendar sync are not documented; calendar sync is one-way ICS.

What each option costs for these workflows

Assumptions: one site, prices as read on 7 September 2026, no tax, no currency conversion (YITH sells in EUR, Sales Igniter in USD; we will not guess a rate). Sales Igniter figures use the promo codes on the pricing page, list prices in brackets. Scenario 1 runs on Regular; scenarios 2 and 3 need Pro.

Promo codes are subject to change; list prices apply if they are withdrawn. Custom development (multi-depot, Dokan) is excluded from every row.

Over three years YITH is a €749.97 subscription for a plugin that still lacks serials, check-in / check-out, refundable deposits and signing; Sales Igniter Pro is $299 required plus up to $398 optional, and includes all four. Switching from YITH Booking to Sales Igniter: what to plan for

There is no migration tool between the two, and we are not going to promise one. What changes, in practice:

  • Products. YITH’s bookable product is its own product type; Sales Igniter adds rental settings to standard WooCommerce products. Each product is re-created, or bulk-loaded through Sales Igniter’s CSV import once mapped.
  • Future reservations. YITH exports selected bookings to CSV. Forward hires are re-entered as Sales Igniter manual reservations (no customer details required) so the calendar blocks the right stock from day one.
  • Historical orders stay in WooCommerce untouched; only their booking metadata is YITH-specific. Keep YITH’s export if you need old booking details later.
  • Pricing. Translate price rules into the pricing grid (per-day plus “from 7 days decrease 15%” becomes day and week rates) and check a few past orders reprice to the same total.
  • Availability. Availability rules and the after-only buffer become closed days, disabled dates and before/after turnover; recheck products where the pre-hire buffer was handled by hand.
  • Anything YITH did that Sales Igniter does not — people types, services, Google Calendar push, YITH ecosystem plugins — needs a replacement or a decision to drop it.

Frequently asked questions

Can YITH Booking track how many of an item I have in stock?

It caps bookings per unit of time and lets a resource carry an available quantity, which covers “three identical rooms”. Its own FAQ says it “does not manage any stock” and suggests a people type as a workaround. For counted stock drawn down across overlapping hires, test that behaviour before committing.

Is a YITH deposit the same as a refundable security deposit?

No. YITH’s separately sold Deposits / Down Payments plugin splits the price into a deposit now and a balance later, and cannot be used with products that require admin confirmation. A refundable security deposit is an extra amount returned after the item comes back, which is what Sales Igniter’s Pro add-on does.

Does Sales Igniter stop working if I do not renew?

No. Renewal at $199 a year buys another year of updates and support; there is no licence check. Whether YITH’s plugin keeps running on a lapsed licence is not stated on its product page; ask YITH.

Can I rent by the hour in both?

Yes. YITH has hour and minute units with a time increment and after-booking buffer. Sales Igniter has date + time rentals with hour-by-hour availability, fixed lengths such as 2h or 4h, opening hours and before/after turnover.

I rent equipment and take appointments. Do I have to pick one?

Not necessarily. They are separate plugins on separate product types, so a store hiring PA systems and booking sound engineers could run rentals through Sales Igniter and staff time through YITH. Neither vendor documents the combination; test it on staging first.

Which YITH price is right, EUR or USD?

YITH’s store API returns €249.99 per year; the product page fills the price in with a script and may show USD to US visitors. Third-party listings quoting $249.99 are not from YITH. Treat the checkout price as authoritative.

Try the rental workflow with your own dates

The quickest check on this article is to rent something on the free live demo with the chair, camera or stroller numbers above, watch the inventory report move, then send and return the order from the admin. If a YITH feature you rely on is missing, say so on the feature requests and roadmap page or contact us with your product list and we will tell you plainly whether Sales Igniter fits.
