The competitor

What Xola is, and who it is for

Xola is an online booking system for tour and activity operators, from Xola Inc., founded in 2011.6 Xola says it is loved by hundreds of companies.7

It covers the day from booking to check-in: a checkout with add-ons, packages, gifts and follow-ups for abandoned bookings,10 guides who get an email or text when assigned and each event’s roster 24 hours before,24 and QR check-ins and a kiosk where walk-up guests book, pay and sign waivers.12

There is no subscription. Xola charges a partner fee on every purchase and asks you to contact it for pricing.1 Its help centre lists a Flex Level fee of 3%,2 and a Flex Standard fee of 6% on online card payments,3 each paid by your guests or by you, depending on eligibility. Its terms run year to year, and you can end them at any time by email.4

What it does

Schedules and time slots

Schedules of time slots per experience, blackout dates, an early cut-off, and a minimum and maximum per event; bookings are accepted once the minimum is reached.21

Pricing

Prices for each guest type, tiers that change with group size, and private pricing per person or per event.22

Guides

Guide profiles with available hours, an email or text when assigned, a roster 24 hours before, and schedules synced to Google Calendar or iCal.24

QR tickets

QR codes in confirmation emails and texts, scanned in its Redemption app for Apple and Android, which flags early, late or repeat check-ins.27

Waivers

Waivers signed at checkout or from the confirmation email, a link guests share with the rest of their group, and rules for minors and guardians.26

Online checkout

A mobile-friendly checkout with add-ons, packages, coupons, gifts and store credit, and follow-ups for abandoned bookings.10

OTAs

Bookings from Expedia, Viator, TripAdvisor, GetYourGuide and Google Things To Do, managed in one place.11

Point of sale and kiosk

Chip-and-PIN card payments, cash and vouchers at the desk, and a kiosk where walk-up guests book, pay and sign waivers.12

Xolabot

Rules that add times after busy slots, cancel upcoming times with no bookings, change prices with demand and offer deals and upsells.18

What it looks like

How it is priced

Flex Level

Freeplus a 3% service fee, paid by your guests or by youNo subscription. 3% of the subtotal before taxes and fees. In the Guest Pays version it is added to every payment, cash included, and shown at checkout; Xola keeps it on card payments and you keep it on cash. Xola also lists a Company Pays version. Eligibility requirements apply.2

Flex Standard

Freeplus a 6% service fee on online card payments, paid by your guests or by youNo subscription. 6% of the subtotal before taxes and fees, on online card payments only, not on in-person or cash payments; in the Guest Pays version guests see it at checkout. Xola also lists a Company Pays version. Eligibility requirements apply.3

Xola has no subscription: it charges a partner fee on every purchase, with no added OTA fees, and asks you to contact it for pricing. Card processing is charged on top, at card rates that vary outside the US.1

The alternative

Sales Igniter: tours and rentals inside a store you own

Sales Igniter is not a hosted service. It is a booking engine that installs into an online store, as a WooCommerce plugin for WordPress, a Magento 2 extension, or an app for Shopify.39 Tours and activities are part of the WooCommerce plugin from Regular: departures with seats, guest types, pickups, a manifest with QR check-in, and guides and boats on a schedule board. The Shopify app has them too, coming soon. Tours are not part of the Magento 2 extension.

On WooCommerce and Magento you buy it once, get the complete source code and run it on your own hosting, with unlimited staff logins, products, customers and orders and no per-booking commission.39 On Shopify it is an app billed monthly or yearly through Shopify, coming soon.41 On every platform the booking is part of your own store: your domain, your theme and your own payment gateway.

What it does

Departures and seats

Tours as products with their own departures, start times and prices, seats left on the calendar, and online sales that stop before the start. On WooCommerce, and built for the Shopify app, coming soon; not part of the Magento 2 extension.

Guests and group prices

Adults, children, infants, seniors, students or your own types, each priced, with group prices by party size and private bookings.

Manifest, QR tickets and check-in

A manifest for each departure with pickups and guest names, QR tickets in the order emails, and check-in by guest or by booking.

Guides, boats and schedules

Staff and resources with skills on each product, sales that stop when none is free, and a drag-and-drop schedule board.

Waivers and extras, from Pro

Each guest signs the waiver and the manifest shows who has signed; extras such as lunch can be priced per guest.

Open code with an API

On WooCommerce and Magento 2: the complete source code, an API that includes departures, and your data in your own database.

Rentals › Departures lists every departure with its seats booked, status, staff and a link to its manifest, with buttons to add a one-off departure or cancel a day.

The difference: Both sell set start times with a limited number of places. Xola runs them on its hosted platform and apps; Sales Igniter runs them in your own WooCommerce store, where the seats left show on the product page.

Online booking

The tour’s product page shows each departure with the seats left; guests choose adults, children or a private booking, a pickup point and their names, and pay at your own WooCommerce checkout.

The difference: Xola adds its 3% or 6% service fee to bookings, paid by your guests or by you. Sales Igniter’s booking is part of your own WooCommerce checkout and payment gateways, with no per-booking commission.

Each departure’s manifest lists the guests with their pickup, waiver and check-in. Staff check in per guest or per booking, scan QR tickets, print it, download a CSV or email it to staff.

The difference: Both check guests in from a list for each departure, with QR codes. Xola adds native apps, a ticket redemption app and a self-serve kiosk; Sales Igniter’s manifest runs in the browser on any phone, inside your own store.

Guides & staff

Guides, captains and boats with skills on each product; sales stop when no qualified one is free. A drag-and-drop schedule board, and a “My schedule” page for each staff member.

The difference: Xola tells guides by email or text and sends the roster the day before. Sales Igniter on WooCommerce can stop sales when no qualified guide or boat is free, and staff check their own schedule in the browser; job emails and texts are in the Shopify app.

Frequently asked questions

Does Sales Igniter take a fee on each booking?

No. On WooCommerce and Magento 2 you buy a licence once, with no per-booking commission, and renewing support and updates each year is optional.39 Xola has no subscription and charges a service fee on bookings: 3% under Flex Level,2 or 6% of online card payments under Flex Standard, paid by your guests or by you.3

Can I still sell through OTAs and resellers?

Not through a built-in connection: Sales Igniter has no OTA or channel connections, though each departure carries event markup that search engines can read. Xola connects to Expedia, Viator, TripAdvisor, GetYourGuide and Google Things To Do,11 with no added OTA fees on its side,1 and tracks the bookings and commissions of agents such as hotel concierges and tour desks.36

Do my guides need an app?

No. On WooCommerce each staff member opens My schedule in a phone browser to see their departures, the manifest and the ticket scanner; there is no native app. Xola’s phone app for iOS and Android lets staff check guests in and take payments, and guides see the events they are assigned to.37

Can every guest sign a waiver?

Yes, from Pro on WooCommerce: each guest signs from a link, a parent or guardian signs for a minor, and the manifest shows who has signed. Xola’s waivers are included free,16 and guests sign at checkout or from their confirmation email, with a link to share with the rest of the group.26

Can I run rentals and tours in the same store?

Yes. The same plugin rents boats, bikes and gear by the hour or the day, and a boat or other resource can also be rented on its own, so it is busy for the tours that need it. Xola can also make equipment the item guests book, with its own pricing and capacity.22

Is there a Shopify or Magento 2 version?

The Shopify app has the same tours features and is coming soon. Tours are not part of the Magento 2 extension, which covers rentals and tracks staff and resources on bookings.
