Members-only products, pages and the Members page

2 min read

A membership tier can keep products, collections and pages for members only. Theme blocks show everyone else a short note with Sign in and Join links, and the app’s checkout check refuses members-only products to anyone who isn’t a member. The Members page lists your tiers so customers can join.

Choose what is members-only #

Open Memberships › Tiers, open a tier and fill in its Members-only section:

  • Members-only products and Members-only collections (every product in the collection);
  • Members-only pages (handles): page handles separated by commas, for example vip-lounge.

Members of that tier get in. “Members-only products are hidden in your theme and can’t be bought at checkout by non-members, but their details stay public to anyone who looks them up directly.”

Members-only products #

Add the Members only app block to your product template in the theme editor, under the buy buttons. On a members-only product, everyone who isn’t a member sees “This product is for members only.” with Sign in (for guests) and Join, and the Add to cart and Buy it now buttons are hidden. Members see the product as usual. You can change the block’s Heading and Text.

The product’s details stay public. What stops a non-member from buying is the Members-only check at checkout, whatever the theme shows.

Members-only sections #

The Members content block shows a section to members only. Put it in the section you want to keep for members:

  • Who can see it: Every member or Members of these tiers, with the Tier handles (for example plus, gold).
  • For everyone else: Hide the rest of this section, or Keep the section visible (a teaser) with the note on top.

The content is still in the page’s code, so don’t put anything secret in it. The block works in sections that accept app blocks.

Members-only pages #

  1. Add the page’s handle to the tier’s Members-only pages (handles).
  2. On the page in your Shopify admin, put the members’ part in the Members-only content field. The page’s own text is what everyone else sees.
  3. Add the Members-only page content block to the page template.

The members’ part is sent to members only, so nobody else can find it in the page’s code. The app also hides these pages from your sitemap and store search (“Checked every day.”). Menus still list them.

Hiding pages from search needs the app’s permission to edit pages. If Shopify asks you to approve a new permission when you open the app, approve it; until then the pages still show in your sitemap and store search.

The Members embed #

Turn on the Members app embed in Theme settings › App embeds for:

  • Members-only pages and collections: the pages and collections chosen in a tier show everyone else only a note;
  • Members-only notice on product pages: the product notice on themes without app blocks.

The Members page #

Your store has a Members page at /apps/subscriptions/members, in your theme’s look. It lists your tiers with their benefits and a Join link to the product that sells each tier. A signed-in member sees “Your membership”: the tier, its benefits and their store credit. Guests also see “Already a member?” with Sign in. Add the page to your menu like any other link.

Join links on the notes go to the Members page, or to the Join link (optional) you set in Settings › Memberships.

Good to know #

  • In the theme editor nothing is hidden, so you can still edit the page. A line says what visitors who aren’t members see.
  • Members-only products can be on sale to members at member prices too. See Memberships, tiers and store credit.
  • The Members page never lists customers or other members.
  • Blog posts have the Members-only content field too: add the Members-only page content block to the blog post template, and every member sees it.
