The driver app

3 min read

Drivers use the driver app on their phone. It opens in the phone’s browser, with no app store, no password and no Shopify account, and it keeps working without a signal. It shows the driver’s routes once you send them, and every tap comes back to the Schedule and the order.

Signing in #

  1. Add the driver under Vehicles & drivers (see Vehicles and drivers). They get the email “Your driver app link for …”.
  2. They open the link on their phone and tap Open the driver app. They stay signed in for 30 days.
  3. Or, in the office, click Sign in on this phone next to the driver and they scan the code with the phone’s camera.

The email suggests adding the app to the phone’s home screen. A used or old link says “That link was already used or is too old. Ask the office for a new one.”

When you send routes, each driver also gets the email “Your routes for …” with their routes and a link to open the app.

My routes #

My routes lists the driver’s routes for the day (Today, Day before, Next day), each with its stops and how many are done. A route appears once you send it from Plan the day. With nothing sent: “No routes for you on this day.”

On the route #

  1. Tap Start route.
  2. Each stop shows stop 1 of 9, Delivery or Collection, the planned time and the slot, the address, the Items and the Customer note, with Navigate, Call and Text.
  3. Tap On my way when leaving for the stop. If you send the On my way message, the customer gets it now. The app shows the Next stop.
  4. Tap Arrived at the address.
  5. Tap Delivered (or Collected for a collection) when it’s done, or Couldn’t deliver when it isn’t.

Delivered and Collected #

The Delivered sheet asks for:

  • Received by: who took it;
  • Signature: signed on the screen, with Clear signature;
  • Note (optional);
  • Photos (up to 3) with Add photo.

Then the driver taps Confirm delivered (Confirm collected for a collection).

Signatures and photos are optional unless you require them. Open Settings › Delivery and proof and set Signature and Photo to Optional or Required. When one is required, the confirm button waits until it is given: “A signature is needed to confirm.”, “Add a photo to confirm.” or “A signature and a photo are needed to confirm.” Couldn’t deliver never asks for them.

Couldn’t deliver #

The driver picks What happened?: No one home, No access, Wrong address, Refused, Vehicle or weather or Other, with a note (“Left a card at the door…”) and up to 3 photos. Other asks them to say what happened. The customer gets the Couldn’t deliver email with a link to pick a new time, and the order is tagged delivery-failed.

No signal #

Every tap is kept on the phone and sent in order when the signal comes back. The app shows “Offline, 2 actions waiting” and Send now. A route opened once while online can be worked without a signal. If the office changes the route, the app says so, for example “Route changed: stop 4 added”.

End route #

Tap End route after the last stop. If some stops aren’t done, the app asks first: “2 stops are not done yet. End the route anyway?” The Route summary shows the stops done, the ones it couldn’t do and any Not visited, with To follow up. When everything has been sent: “Everything is sent. Thank you!”

What happens in Shopify #

When a driver marks a delivery Delivered, the app marks the order fulfilled at that location and delivered in Shopify, at the time of the tap. The fulfilment’s tracking link is the customer’s delivery page. Under Settings › Delivery and proof, Tell the customer it was delivered chooses how the customer hears about it:

ChoiceWhat the customer gets
With our delivered email (default)This app’s Delivered email, with your wording and a link to the delivery page.
With Shopify’s shipping updateShopify’s standard shipping update email.

The Delivered email is part of the Pro plan. On Free and Regular, choose With Shopify’s shipping update if you want customers told.

Show the delivery photo on the customer’s delivery page adds the driver’s first photo to the delivery page behind the link in the messages. The page never shows the address, names or the signature.

If Shopify refuses to let the app mark an order, the stop is still done in the app, and Home asks you to mark those orders fulfilled in Shopify by hand.

The order’s Delivery card and the Schedule’s stop drawer show the proof: Received by, the signature and the photos. See Orders, stops and the Deliveries page.

Good to know #

  • Signatures and photos are kept privately for 180 days, then deleted. Change it with Keep signatures and photos for (days), from 30 to 1095.
  • A driver sees only their own routes, and only after you send them.
  • The driver app is in English for now.
  • With the Rentals & Bookings link on, a rental collection’s Collected sheet starts with What came back: see Delivery Routing with Rentals & Bookings.
