Damage waiver

2 min read

A damage waiver is a fee that covers accidental damage to the hired item. It can be a fixed amount or a percentage of the line price, charged on every qualifying item or once per order, and either required or offered as an opt-in the customer can decline.

The global rule #

SettingWhat it does
AmountA fixed value, or a percentage of the line price.
ChargedPer item (one fee per qualifying line, optionally multiplied by quantity) or per order (a single fee over the qualifying subtotal).
AcceptanceRequired, or optional — an opt-in checkbox at the checkout.
Applies toAll products, rental products only, selected categories, or a hand-picked product list.
Minimum / maximumClamps a percentage waiver so it cannot be trivial or eye-watering.

Overriding it on one product #

Each product has its own Damage Waiver tab with three modes:

ModeEffect
InheritFollow the global rule. The tab prints a one-line summary of what that rule currently does, so you never have to go and look it up.
OverrideAlways charge this product’s own amount — even when the global waiver is switched off entirely.
NeverNever charge a waiver on this product. This always wins.

Variations can override their parent the same way, so one size in a range can carry a different waiver.

Declining, and proving it later #

When the waiver is optional the checkout shows a checkbox. If the customer declines, the decision is stored on the order and an order note records it, so the choice is provable later. The rule that applied is also snapshotted onto the order — editing the global waiver afterwards never rewrites past orders.

Telling the customer up front #

A notice can be shown on the product page, under the price, so the fee is never a surprise at the cart. Switch it on with Show a notice on the product page.
